Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy: Last Updated: July 23, 2018

Your privacy is important to us.  We know how sensitive looking for a new job is, and we know how careful and cautious people can be, especially lawyers, when starting to explore the market.  After all, De Novo was founded by a big firm lawyer who made a lateral move during her legal career.  And, we know that we will only be successful if you trust us with your information.  So please take a look at our Privacy Policy so you can understand what information we’re collecting and what we’re doing with it.

Given that De Novo is initially launching in the legal market, we also know that the people using De Novo are lawyers.  So, lawyers, if you think we missed something, or you want us to clarify anything, or you think you could do a better job drafting our policy, please email us at

This privacy policy (“Privacy Policy”) describes the information collected by De Novo, LLC (“De Novo,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), how that information may be used, with whom it may be shared, and your choices about such uses and disclosures. By using our mobile app, our website, located at, and/or other services we provide (collectively, “Services”), you are accepting the practices set forth in this Privacy Policy.  If you do not agree with this policy, then you must not access or use our Services.  (Again, because this is a contract, and that’s how contracts work.)

Information We Collect and How We Collect It

Information We Collect Automatically

There is some information we may collect automatically from you when you use our Services. Specifically, we may automatically collect and store certain information about your mobile device or computer and your activities.  That information may include:
1. Mobile Device ID. Your mobile device's unique ID number (e.g., IMEI).
2. Geographic Location. Your mobile device's geographic location when you register for our Services and when you move to a different location.
3. Device Information/Specifications. Technical information about your mobile device or computer (e.g., type of device, web browser or operating system, IP address) to analyze trends, administer the site, prevent fraud, render graphics, track visitor movement in the aggregate, and gather broad demographic information.
4. Length and Extent of Usage. How long you used our Services and which services and features you used.

5.  Content viewed and actions taken.  What content (i.e., jobs) you viewed and what actions you took (i.e., actions taken in response to job cards)
5. Cookies: We may use “cookies” to keep track of some types of information while you are visiting De Novo or using our services. “Cookies” are very small files placed on your computer, and they allow us to count the number of visitors to our site and distinguish repeat visitors from new visitors. They also allow us to save user preferences and track user trends.

6. Web Beacons: We may use “web beacons” (also known as “clear gifs” and “pixel tags”), which are small transparent graphic images that are often used in conjunction with cookies in order to further personalize De Novo for our users and to collect a limited set of information about our visitors. We may also use web beacons in email communications in order to understand the behavior of our customers, such as whether an email has been opened or acted upon.

Information You Choose to Provide

Information We Obtain LinkedIn: When you create a profile on De Novo, you will have an option to pre-populate a portion of your profile information by connecting with LinkedIn.  This is optional, not required.  In doing so, you are authorizing us to access certain LinkedIn account information, including information about you, your current place of work, and your current geographic city.  By allowing us to access your LinkedIn account, you understand that we may obtain certain information from your LinkedIn account, including your name, email address, work history, education history, current city, and LinkedIn connections.  We only obtain information from your LinkedIn account that you specifically authorize and grant us permission to obtain.  By allowing us to access your LinkedIn account, you understand that we may obtain any of the photos from your LinkedIn account.

Information We Obtain About You From Third Party Sources:  When you register a profile, we may gather some of your public, professional information from outside sources (such as your location, current employer, practice areas and specialties, law school, JD year, and honors/achievements, current location state(s) of bar admission).  You are able to edit all of this information.  We make this available to make it easier and more convenient for you to use De Novo.

Information You Provide Directly to Us: When you register with De Novo, unless you choose to log in using LinkedIn, you must provide certain information, including your first name, last name, email address, and a password.  In order to complete the registration process, you also are directed to claim your profile by searching for your work email address, or build your profile manually, by entering in information related to your professional experience (including your location, current employer, practice area, law school, JD year, GPA, honors/achievements, other degrees you have obtained, any previous legal employers, and the state of your bar membership).  You are also able to change your username and edit that frequently to make it whatever you want.  None of the information you provide may be viewed by other users of De Novo or any law firms or companies or their personnel.  However, your profile information IS accessible and viewable by authorized third party recruiters if you have set your notifications to allow authorized third party recruiters to initiate communication with you, or if you initiate a chat with an authorized third party recruiter (a designated expert), so that the third party recruiters can provide helpful and accurate services.  Your Notification settings can be changed at any time from the Settings Tab or from the link entitled “Notifications” in the Profile.  Third party recruiters cannot share this information (see Terms of Service).  In addition, your profile information is accessible to employees or independent contractors of De Novo for technical support purposes.

Emails: We request an email address from you when you register with De Novo.  We use your email for both “administrative” (e.g., confirming your registration) and “promotional” (e.g., newsletters, new product offerings, event notifications, special third-party offers) purposes.  Email messages we send you may contain a code that enables our database to track your usage of the e-mails, including whether the e-mail was opened and what links (if any) were clicked.  You may opt-out of receiving promotional emails and other promotional communications from us at any time via the opt-out links provided in such communications, or by e-mailing with your specific request.  However, we reserve the right to send you certain communications relating to De Novo such as service announcements, security alerts, update notices, or other administrative messages without affording you the opportunity to opt out of receiving such communications.   This information can also be customized in the Notifications setting of the app.

Push Notifications/Texts Messages:  By registering with De Novo and allowing push notifications, you hereby authorize us to send push notifications to your mobile phone to facilitate your engagement with the app.  To the extent that De Novo collects a phone number for you and sends you SMS messages, you agree that you own that phone number you provide and will not hold De Novo responsible for text message charges.

Online Survey Data: We may periodically conduct voluntary user surveys. We encourage our users to participate in such surveys because they inform us with respect to what we can improve about our product and service.  We do not link the survey responses to your name or email address, and all responses are anonymous.

How We Use the Information

Pursuant to the terms of this Privacy Policy, we may use the information we collect from you for the following purposes:
1. To facilitate matches with job opportunities;
2. To communicate with you regarding opportunities;

3. To respond to your comments and questions and provide customer service;
4. To communicate with you about the De Novo app in general and related offers, promotions, news, upcoming events, and other information we think will be of interest to you;
5. To monitor and analyze trends, usage and activities;
6. To investigate and prevent fraud and other illegal activities;

7.  To make suggestions and draw inferences about you. For example, we may make suggestions about additional jobs that might be of interest to you, or of products or services that might be of interest to you; and

8. To provide, maintain, and improve De Novo and our overall business.

Use for Research and Blog/Article Posts:  In addition to the uses outlined above, by using De Novo, you agree to allow us to anonymously use the information from you and your experiences to continue our research into successful job placements, including determining matches, processing and facilitating submissions, and coordinating and obtaining interviews, offers, and acceptances, so that we may continue to improve the De Novo experience.  This research may be published in our blogs, articles or interviews.  However, all of your responses will be kept anonymous, and no personal information will be published.

Sharing Your Information

Information Shared with Others. We will share your profile information with outside legal recruiters.  We will share this information based on your Notifications Settings in the app (under Settings or accessed through your Profile page) and/or we will share this information with your designated recruiting expert if you click on a link and ask for more information. In addition, once you apply to a job, we will share your information with a De Novo recruiting expert so that the expert can review your materials and submit your materials to the firm or company or follow up with you first if the expert has questions.  De Novo is a third party company, so submitting materials to a job does not directly go to the firm or company.  By applying to a job through De Novo, you authorize us to contact firms and companies on your behalf and submit you to those jobs.

Without your consent, we will not otherwise share any of your personal information with any other party(s) for commercial purposes, except when we have your permission, or under the following circumstances:

Service Providers. We may share your information with our third-party service/technical providers that support various aspects of our business operations (e.g., security and technology providers, analytics providers, and payment processors).

Legal Disclosures and Business Transfers. We may disclose any information without notice or consent from you: (a) in response to a legal request, such as a subpoena, court order, or government demand; (b) to investigate or report illegal activity; or (c) to enforce our rights or defend claims. We may also transfer your information to another company in connection with a merger, corporate restructuring, sale of any or all of our assets, or in the event of bankruptcy.

Aggregate Data. We may share aggregated, non-personal information with third parties, including advisors, advertisers and investors, for the purpose of conducting general business analysis.

Referring Your Friends

We encourage you to refer your friends to De Novo by sending them a pre-populated email or SMS about De Novo.  When your friend signs up with De Novo and is placed, we may offer you money for the referral.  We also may offer other incentives for encouraging friends to sign up from time to time.  You agree that you will not abuse this feature by entering the email addresses or phone numbers of individuals who would not be bona fide users of De Novo, because, for instance, they already have a De Novo profile, or they would not be eligible for De Novo, or are not in good standing in their jurisdiction, or are otherwise ineligible.  Please see the Terms of Service for user requirements.

Updating or Removing Account Information

You may review or edit your profile as you wish, by logging into your De Novo account using the information supplied during the registration process.  If you would like to delete your account, which we hope you don’t, please email us at

Third Party Sites

De Novo may contain links to other websites. If you choose to click on a third party link, you will be directed to that third party's website. The fact that we link to a website is not an endorsement, authorization or representation of our affiliation with that third party, nor is it an endorsement of their privacy or information security policies or practices. We do not exercise control over third party websites. These other websites may place their own cookies or other files on your computer, collect data or solicit personal information from you. Other websites follow different rules regarding the use or disclosure of the personal information you submit to them. We encourage you to read the privacy policies or statements of the other websites you visit.

Age restriction

At least for right now, De Novo is meant for practicing lawyers.  Practicing lawyers in the United States are generally over 18 years old (usually well over 18, but there may be some of you geniuses out there).  Because of our general demographic, we do not, therefore, target people under 18 years of age to use De Novo.  However, if you are a parent or legal guardian who discovers that your overachieving child has provided us with information without your consent, you may contact us at, and we will promptly delete such information from our files.

Securing Your Personal Information

We endeavor to safeguard personal information to ensure that information is kept private. However, please be aware that unauthorized entry or use, hardware or software failure, the inherent insecurity of the Internet and other factors, may compromise the security of your personal information at any time. As such, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information.

Using De Novo from outside the United States

Currently, De Novo is intended only for users within the United States.  Accordingly, this Privacy Policy is intended to cover the collection of information by our mobile device and Website from residents of the United States.  As a result, United States federal and state governments, courts, or law enforcement or regulatory agencies may be able to obtain disclosure of your information through laws applicable in the United States.  If you are using De Novo from outside the United States, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States where our servers are located and our central database is operated.  By using De Novo, you understand and agree that your information may be transferred to our facilities and those third parties with whom we share it as described in this Privacy Policy.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time at our sole discretion. When we post changes to this Privacy Policy, we will revise the "last updated" date at the top of this Privacy Policy.  We will do our best to let you know of changes in our app updates, but we recommend that you be lawyerly and check our Website from time to time to inform yourself of any changes in this policy or any of our other policies.
